RTL Infos - Hospitals, medical homes, general practitioners...: What to do if your child is sick in Luxembourg?

Luxembourg can generally pride itself on offering good care for sick children. A short guide to knowing which service to contact.

If you have a sick child in Luxembourg, you have several options for seeking medical assistance.

The emergencies

In case of a medical emergency, dial 112. This is the emergency number in Luxembourg for police, fire and medical emergencies.

Medical House

In Luxembourg, a medical center is an on-call medical center where you can take your child to see a general practitioner outside traditional office opening hours. It is important to check with your local medical home before bringing a child under the age of two, as they will generally not treat an infant under the age of two.

On-call medical centers were created to replace general practitioners for night care, weekends and public holidays. They provide a replacement service when medical practices are closed, according to www.sante.lu.

They offer medical assistance but are not emergency services. In the event of a medical emergency, you must always dial 112 directly.

Opening hours are weekdays: from 8 p.m. to midnight. Saturday, Sunday and public holidays: 8 a.m. to midnight. After midnight, you must call 112.

Consultations are done without an appointment for the three medical centers. The telephone switchboard is accessible during the opening hours of the medical center at (+352) 20 333 111.

There are three on-call medical centers available throughout the country. They operate in the following locations:

Luxembourg city – 23, Val Fleuri, L-1526 Luxembourg.

Belval – 3-5, avenue du Swing, L-4367 Belvaux (Esch-Belval), Luxembourg

Ettelbruck – 110, avenue Lucien Salentiny, L-9080 Ettelbruck, Luxembourg

It is advisable to contact the relevant center directly to find out about the services they offer and their opening hours.

Kannerklinik

The Children's Clinic is located on the campus of the Center Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) and is the main point of contact for the care of children in Luxembourg. It has an emergency department where you can take your child to a pediatrician if they need urgent medical attention.

The address is 4 Rue Ernest Barblé, L-1210 Luxembourg.

There is also a Pediatric Medical Center, for children aged 0 to 15 inclusive requiring urgent, non-hospital medical care, outside the consultation hours of their attending physician/pediatrician.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. all year round and weekends and public holidays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Upon arrival at the Kannerklinik, your child is first seen by the nurse on duty who, depending on the reason for admission, will then refer your child to the emergency room or the pediatric medical center, according to www.chl. read.

The Pediatric Medical Center offers a continuity service for pediatric primary care. This service is provided by all private pediatricians in the region, based on the model of medical centers. The Pediatric Medical Center guarantees access to pediatric consultations, outside the time slots of pediatric practices, for children whose situation does not require hospital care.

You do not need a referral from a general practitioner to take your child to see an outpatient specialist in a Luxembourg hospital. However, hospital care such as surgery requires a referral.

The Northern Hospital Center (CHdN) in Ettelbruck

This hospital offers pediatric care accessible to children without an appointment. The service is available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The address is: 120 Av. Lucien Salentiny, 9080 Ettelbruck.

However, the hospital is not equipped to handle cases involving children arriving by ambulance, those with serious illnesses requiring hospitalization, those in life-threatening distress, or those requiring psychiatric care. In such cases, the KannerKlinik remains the main contact.

The Pediatric Policlinic, Kirchberg Hospital

The Pediatric Policlinic is located on the ground floor of Kirchberg Hospital. It is accessible via the main entrance of the Bohler Clinic. The Pediatric Policlinic offers a general pediatric service, consultations and hospitalizations. The pediatric emergency department is open 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to any child aged 0 to under 15 who requires urgent medical, surgical, ophthalmological or even psychiatric care.

There are some cases where an appointment is necessary to get to the hospital. These are medical conditions such as cold, cough, fever, conjunctivitis, etc. as well as when patients were referred by another doctor.

The address is as follows: Kirchberg Hospital – Pediatric Emergency Units/Policlinic, 9 rue Edward Steichen, L-2540 Luxembourg.

General practitioner

You can also consult a general practitioner or pediatrician for non-urgent medical problems. They can provide assessment and treatment or refer you to a specialist if necessary. Appointments can be made via https://www.doctena.lu/fr/.
